If the recent global economic downturn and quickening pace of dangerous climate disruption have taught us just one lesson, it’s that the transition to a worldwide green economy needs to happen faster. And that’s what McKinstry Reklaim is all about. We’re working hard to help create jobs and important recycled products and energy, while reducing waste, in ways that are great for the environment. Through licensing arrangements, our goal is to become a leading edge
scrap tire recycling technology provider.
More than 300 million scrap tires are generated every year in the U.S. alone – the equivalent of more than one scrap tire for every man, woman and child in this country. In the past, figuring out what to do with all these scrap tires has been a significant economic and environmental challenge, and hundreds of millions of tires were
land filled. Today, there are more scrap tire management options, including the use of tire-derived fuel in facilities like cement kilns, the use of tire-derived aggregate in civil engineering projects, and the production of crumb rubber to make soft playground and ball-field surfaces.
But as industry leaders like the
Rubber Manufacturers Association
have said, there’s still an urgent
need for new scrap tire markets that
are economically viable and
environmentally sound. And that’s
what is so exciting about the patent
pending McKinstry Reklaim
technology.
Scrap
tire rubber isn’t burned in our process, so greenhouse gas pollution
isn’t an issue at our plants. Instead, our tire pyrolysis process recovers and recycles scrap
tire rubber into oil, carbon black and steel – important commerical
products that are normally expensive and environmentally hazardous to
produce. In addition, our technology gives plant operators the ability to
generate usable energy from our closed loop technology – enough to
generate more than half a plant's power needs. Eventually, we expect our licensed plants to be carbon
neutral with the ability to generate carbon credits for other industries
in the emerging carbon “cap and trade" regulatory environment.
Our
facilities are not only good to the environment, they also create
significant economic benefits for the families, businesses and
communities they join. We already have 7 employees receiving family wages
and full benefits at our plant in Boardman, Oregon, and plan to add more
employees by the end of 2009. We will eventually have several dozen employees when operating at
full production capacity.
We
expect that each new plant licensing the McKinstry Reklaim technology
will create several dozen new jobs, depending on production capacity. The
positive economic multiplier effect of those facilities will help local
communities by creating jobs in construction, transportation, and area
businesses.
